Beginning in 2001, the Baltimore Grays were born with the vision of three longtime friends (William Caffee, Calvin Coates, and Ryan Shaw) who graduated from Baltimore City College High School in 1990. Our goal was to simply have a Men's team made up of City College Alumni. We started this team with the idea of controlling our own organization as softball players. We all were playing on other teams and not having a great deal of fun. As a result, we thought we could run a team better and become better players if we ran our own softball organization. Nonetheless, as the team's make up changed from an alumni team to a team of misfits, which included many early lopsided losses. The team name changed from the Knights (City College mascot) to the Grays; paying homage to the Negro League team called the Homestead Grays. Later in that first year, we added a couple more coaches; Milton Garnes (City class of 89), James Walls (City class of 89), and Mike Smoot (Walbrook Alum). Soon after, we added coed team. Later, a women team was added to the Grays family, which is coached by Lisa Parker (City class of 92).

  • Pikesville/Owings Mills Men's Softball League League Profile
    Pikesville/Owings Mills Men's Softball League
    Owings Mills, MD
Our league games are on Sunday mornings only, with doubleheaders on all 4 fields at Northwest Regional Park in Owings Mills starting at 9 AM. Please visit the league website, www.pikesvillesoftball.com , for directions to the fields. We play modified pitch (flat pitch), but most other rules are as per ASA slow-pitch with 4 outfielders and 1 extra-hitter. The count starts at 0-0 and there is no foul ball penalty after 2 strikes. Because of this style of play, the games are longer than slow-pitch games and typically run until about 12:15 PM-- sometimes earlier with the 12 run slaughter rule. You can view video of our style of play by visiting the league website, www.pikesvillesoftball.com .

The roster size is unlimited during the Regular Season, however, only 11 players are in the line-up at any one time. We use the ASA rules for re-entry of starters. Most of the other league rules are also ASA-- basically ASA slow-pitch rules, but modified (flat pitch) pitching style. To qualify for the Playoffs/Tournament, a player must play in 9 Regular Season games.

Please send me an email if you have further questions or are ready to enter your team for the 2011 season. Due to a limitation of 4 fields, we have space for just 8 total teams for the 2011 season. E-mail questions directly to
    expansion@pikesvillesoftball.com
